This is the first article in the Battle of The Apps series. In this article, Femi Bakre describes some of the prominent features in the Telegram app, versus the WhatsApp app.
In April 2018, the Russian Government banned Telegram for being too awesome.
If you give me a chance by reading this article, I will be rubbing the goodness in your face. No vex, abeg.
WhatsApp is great, but is it (the best) for you and your business?
Here are some factors to consider when making your decision. I hope they help:
-
1 Privacy
"What is your WhatsApp number?"- I'm sure that's familiar.
WhatsApp has over 1.5 billion monthly users, versus Telegram's about 200 million. You may see this as WhatsApp's win but another angle is, there aren't so many Telegram users, so it's excellent for your private stuff. You don't need to give out your number to connect with others on Telegram, as opposed to WhatsApp. You only need to share your username with them, and they can search for you and connect. For instance, I'm on Telegram as @femibakre, and I don't need to share my phone number with others, to connect. I can allow specific contacts to see my 'Last Seen' time, and I also have control over who can add me to a group, or not. Goodbye to spam! -
2 Security
Telegram's most impressive feature; it is so secure that the Russian Government had to ban it, for fear of terrorist use.
As you know, Facebook, owner of WhatsApp, is renowned for giving third-party authorities access to your data and mine. The good people at Telegram have a different policy, however. They'd instead be banned than give anyone, even the government, decryption keys to users' data since all messages are encrypted end-to-end. Telegram also has Secret Chat features that prevent you or your recipient from forwarding texts out of your secret chat and disable screenshots of the conversation. You can also delete the entire chat history from your device and the recipient's (for both regular and Secret Chat), or set an auto-destruct timer for the chat which automatically deletes all conversations after the set time elapses. Moreover, you can have a Secret Chat with a contact, and still, have your regular chat ongoing separately and simultaneously.
As if these security features aren't enough, Telegram allows you to see all your active sessions on all devices you're logged in, and you can cancel or log out of any one of them seamlessly. You can also set a passcode for your app, and set up two-factor authentication whenever you log in on a new device.
To crown it, Telegram announced a competition inviting the public to crack their app for a $300,000 cash prize in February 2015, and the prize money is still unclaimed. If Telegram isn't secure enough for you, no other messenger app will be! -
3 User Experience
Telegram has a rather simple, intuitive interface. You're busy and don't have all the time to learn how to use new apps so Telegram will be just fine for you.
Unlike WhatsApp, you can edit media and texts you send, and delete without a trace! Moreover, when people mention you in chats on Telegram, you can see one mention after the other if there are multiple mentions - WhatsApp only shows you the first mention, and you have to find the rest on your own. Telegram also allows you to customise your experience by editing your themes and even enabling "Night Mode" manually or by schedule.
I only see users having more control of their app. This is Telegram!
In my next article, I'll be talking about the final five reasons why Telegram trumps WhatsApp. Meanwhile, did you learn a thing or two about Telegram?
