But Will It Help Your Pocket?

CBN no wan gree for anybody this September. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has finally given us small breathing space by cutting interest rates.
Yes, you heard that right.

For the first time since 2020, the Central Bank of Nigeria just cut its benchmark interest rate by 0.5%  bringing it down to 27%.

But before you start screaming “soft life activated,” let’s break it down.

What This Means in Plain English

Interest rates are basically the “price” of borrowing money, the rate cut means borrowing could get cheaper, at least on paper. When the CBN reduces it, banks are supposed to make loans cheaper.

Good news for SMEs wey dey always beg for loan approvals.

Translation? Your business loan, car loan, or that house mortgage you’ve been dreaming of might get cheaper.

And there’s emphasis on might oooo.
Because Nigerian banks can still decide to be banks and keep rates high anyway.

Don’t expect your bank to suddenly turn to charity, but repayment wahala might reduce small.

Why They Did It

CBN says it’s to “boost growth and ease the burden of rising prices.” In other words, they see how we’re all screaming about food prices and fuel costs, and they’re trying to help.

But we’ve heard that song before.
This is Nigeria, until we see cheaper loans with our own eyes, we’re not shouting hallelujah yet.

But one thing is sure, if loans actually get cheaper, expect Nigerians to start splurging on things, from cars to PlayStations and talk-of-the-town parties.

Because if there’s one thing we know how to do, it’s chop life first and think later.
