Dogs are a man’s best friend, and we absolutely agree.
Many Nigerians own dogs and some have no idea the capacity of these dogs they own!
Here’s a list on dogs you need to have arounds as a Nigerian and why! And if you still think all dogs are just “Bingo,” this post is about to school you.

1. Rottweiler

This dog is considered to be one of the oldest surviving dog breeds.
It acquired its name from the old free city of Rottweil in Germany, and was originally known as the “Rottweil butcher’s dog” because local butchers bred these dogs for their strength, endurance, and utility.
Some even say they might just be the best guard dogs.

Traits: Strong, Intelligent, loyal, protective

2. German Shepherd

The German Shepherd, also known as the Alsatian in some regions, is a medium to large-sized working dog originally bred in Germany in 1899 by Max von Stephanitz.

It was developed from traditional herding dogs and quickly gained fame for its intelligence, strength, and versatility.
In Nigeria, German Shepherds are prized for their security capabilities, obedience, and prestige.

3. Boerboel

The Boerboel is a large, muscular dog breed originally developed in South Africa. Its name comes from the Afrikaans words “boer” (farmer) and “boel” (dog), meaning “farmer’s dog.” Bred to guard homesteads against predators and intruders.

In Nigeria, Boerboels are especially popular among homeowners and estate dwellers who want a dog that can deter intruders while still being safe around children.
Their African origin also makes them well adapted to the climate and environment.

4. Lhasa Apso

The Lhasa Apso is a small, long-haired dog originally bred in Tibet to guard monasteries. Despite its petite frame, this breed is known for being alert, confident, and surprisingly protective.

5. Caucasian Shepherd

The Caucasian Shepherd, also known as the Caucasian Ovcharka, is a massive, fearless dog originally bred in the Caucasus Mountains to protect livestock from predators like wolves.

With roots in Georgia, Armenia, and Russia, this breed has long been valued for its strength, loyalty, and protective instincts.

6. Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world, but don’t let its size fool you, this little dog has a bold, sassy spirit and a heart full of loyalty.

Originating from Mexico, the breed is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua and is believed to descend from the ancient Techichi, a sacred dog of the Toltec civilization.

EKUKE: SPECIAL DOG

Even if we forget other breeds, we cannot forget our very own kings of the Nigerian streets.
Some call them Bingo, others call them “Boski boski”, but generally we call them Ekuke.

They might be skinny and unpredictable till you look for their trouble and realize why they can comfortably excel on the streets of Nigeria with no owner.

This is a Loyal and intelligent breed, they are good with children and warm to family members and friends, they also make excellent guard dogs and are eager to please, making them easy to train.

No matter what kind of Porsche dog you decide to adopt, Ekuke will forever remain the king of the Nigerian dog community, and no Ekuke slander will be tolerated at all!
