Wahala for Who No Sabi Fight: A Review of Ola Cardoso’s Suky

Hey movie lovers! Have you watched Suky yet? Because I did, and let’s just say… my heart is still recovering from the serious punches that landed, not just in the ring, but on my emotions too!

So, what’s Suky all about? Picture Brotherhood meets The Hunger Games, but instead of fancy arenas and pep talks, you get pure, unfiltered Dambe boxing…the kind that makes you question if you would ever survive one round (spoiler: you wouldn’t).

The movie follows a young man (played by James Damilare) who is caught in a brutal cycle of violence inside Aja Prison. His one shot at freedom? Winning an underground Dambe tournament. Because obviously, the best way to settle life problems isn’t through therapy or legal action, it’s through punching your way to glory.

Now, let’s talk about the cast because Omo! Tobi Bakare, Femi Adebayo, Bimbo Ademoye, and Boma Akpore did not come to play. Their performances were so intense, I almost started shadowboxing in my living room. And the action sequences? Pure mayhem! The kind that makes you wince, cheer, and low-key pray for the actors all at once.

And the soundtrack? Chef’s kiss! A fusion of traditional Dambe beats and modern cinematic scores that had me vibing even after the movie ended, much to annoyance of my neighbours

But what really got me? The cinematography. Visually stunning, raw, and immersive, taking you into the gritty world of underground boxing.…You don’t just watch the fights, you feel them. Plus, the themes of survival, resilience, and redemption hit hard, making this more than just a boxing film. In my estimation, it was timely and thought-provoking.

Final verdict? 4.5 out of 5 stars. If you love high-stakes action, intense drama, and a good underdog story, Suky is a must-watch. Just make sure you are holding popcorn, not imaginary boxing gloves.

Seen Suky? What did you think? And be honest, did you throw a few practice punches after watching?
