Almost everyday in Nigeria, we see a lot of uniformed men carrying out their duties, and honestly, we don’t even know what government agency they work for.
We can’t really differentiate between a soldier and another officer of the law. Why!
If you’re part of the population that do not know all the government Security agencies in Nigeria, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

1. Nigeria Police Force (NPF)

Founded in 1820, the NPF is Nigeria’s primary law enforcement agency.
They handle crime prevention, investigation, and public safety. If someone’s shouting “officer!” in your neighborhood, it’s probably them.

Currently Headed by: Kayode Egbetokun

2. Department of State Services (DSS)

Also known as the State Security Service (SSS), this agency deals with domestic intelligence.
They protect top government officials and monitor internal threats like terrorism and espionage.
Think of them as Nigeria’s version of the FBI.

Currently Headed by: Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi

3. National Intelligence Agency (NIA)

This agency handles foreign intelligence and counterintelligence. If it involves spies, embassies, or international secrets, the NIA is on it.
Oh, you didn’t know we also have our own CIA? dey play!

Currently Headed by: Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed

4. Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)

The NSCDC protects critical infrastructure, like pipelines, power stations, and schools.
They also assist during emergencies and disasters.

Currently Headed by: Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi

5. Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)

They’re the traffic police of Nigeria.
From issuing driver’s licenses to managing road safety campaigns, FRSC keeps the highways (mostly) sane.

Currently Headed by: Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed

6. Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)

Handles passports, visas, and border control.
Whether you’re traveling out or sneaking in, they’re the gatekeepers.

Currently Headed by: Kemi Nanna Nandap

7. National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)

They Fight drug trafficking and abuse.
If you’re moving funny with suspicious packages, they’ll be knocking.
focusing on eliminating the production, processing, and distribution of illicit drugs.

Currently Headed by: Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa

8. Nigeria Customs Service

Manages import/export regulations and collects customs duties. They’re the reason your overseas package might take a little longer, and that container might get stuck at high sea.

9. Nigerian Armed Forces

Includes the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
They defend Nigeria from external threats and handle major internal security operations when things get serious. If you know, you know

Currently Headed by: The Nigerian president (Commander-in-chief of the Armed forces)/ Chief of defence staff (General Christopher Musa).

10. Nigerian Correctional Service

Manages prisons and rehabilitation of inmates. They ensure convicted individuals serve their time and (hopefully) come out better.

The next time you see any official around you, I truly hope you’re able to identify them by their uniforms and their logos!
Oya say thank you!

Currently Headed by: Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche
