Being a man in today’s world is not a small assignment. The pressure is plenty, the expectations are high, and somehow, men are still expected to be strong, unshaken, composed and smiling through everything.
So today, International Men’s Day, we want to pause and appreciate Nigerian men — because even though they don’t always say it, many of them are going through a lot and still trying their best.
They Carry Pressure and Still Stand
From career to family responsibility, expectations from society, financial demands, leadership roles, and “be a man” mindset — the load is plenty. Men are taught to handle everything without breaking. The fact that many of them are still showing up every day deserves some respect.
They Don’t Share Much, But They Feel a Lot
A lot of men have been raised to believe talking about their emotions is weakness. So instead of saying “I’m tired,” you’ll hear:
“I dey manage.”
“It is well.”
“I go dey alright.”
But the truth is, they feel things deeply — they just don’t always have a space to express it. Today, we acknowledge that silence doesn’t mean strength; sometimes it just means no safe space to talk.
They Take Care of Everyone
Men are expected to provide, support, fix, protect, lead, solve, and still not complain. And somehow, many of them do it with patience, focus and a straight face. The effort shows — even when they don’t talk about it.
They Try, Even When Nobody Is Checking on Them
Very few people ask men, “How are you really doing?”
Meanwhile, a lot of Nigerian men are navigating financial stress, career pressure, family expectations and the challenges of becoming the man they want to be.
They may not always say it out loud, but many of them are struggling quietly and still pushing through every single day.
They Love Differently
Not all men will write paragraphs or make speeches, but you’ll know by the little things:
“Call me when you get home.”
“Did you eat?”
“I’ll send it tomorrow.”
Care doesn’t always come in poems — sometimes it comes in consistency.
They Deserve Respect, Rest and Encouragement
Men are often told to be strong for everyone else. Today, we say:
Strong doesn’t mean silent.
Strong doesn’t mean emotionless.
Strong doesn’t mean carrying everything alone.
Men deserve support too. They deserve appreciation, softness, understanding, and spaces where they don’t have to act like superheroes all the time.
To every Nigerian man reading this:
We see you.
We respect your effort.
We appreciate your sacrifices.
Even on the days you don’t feel enough, you are trying — and that alone is something to be proud of.
Happy International Men’s Day.
