"Do you think the world would run as efficiently as it should if we all sat around feeling depressed?"
The first thing you need to know is depression is not a choice.
A person struggling with depression doesn't want to be, the person just is.
"How can you be rich AND depressed?"
A depressed person could have it all and still grapple with depression.
That's why it's called depression and not 'hormonal imbalance due to poverty'.
"You know what you need? The sun!"
The sun is not going to shine and make it all better. They may need the vitamin D but that's not all that is needed to fight depression.
And also, you're not a doctor.
"You have a roof over your head and food to eat. Be grateful and suck it up"
You'll hear this a lot in Nigeria.
"You should be more grateful and thankful because you're alive, people are lying in mortuaries wishing they were alive."
Number 1. Dead people cannot wish for anything.
Number 2. By saying that, you could push the person to consider suicide.
Just don't do it.
"You should come to my church or mosque"
God can perform miracles, no doubt.
But it doesn't always happen in a church or mosque.
"You've always been like this. Aren't you tired of being like this?"
Yes, they probably are but you iterating that will not make it any better.
"You just want attention and we don't have time to give it to you"
"Sha don't go and kill yourself"
Do not say this to a depressed person even if you're trying to help them.
Not every depressed person wants to commit suicide but saying that to them is encouraging them to consider it.
"You're not depressed, you're selfish"
No, a depressed person is not selfish.
No, a depressed person is not seeking attention
A depressed person genuinely is depressed.
"What are you using your head to think about?"
"It's probably her periods"
