At This Point, What Else Does Mbappé Need to Prove?

3 min

France have booked their place in the next round after defeating Sweden, but beyond the victory, Kylian Mbappé etched his name deeper into football history by becoming France’s all-time leading goalscorer.

At just 27, he’s already collecting records many legends spent entire careers chasing. Yet, for some reason, we’ve become so used to Mbappé doing ridiculous things that we’ve stopped appreciating just how ridiculous they are.

The Guy Is Only 27

Let’s put this into perspective.

At 27, many footballers are just entering the best years of their careers. Some are still trying to establish themselves as regular starters. Others are hoping to win their first major trophy.

Mbappé?

He’s already won a World Cup.

Played in another World Cup final.

Collected league titles.

Won countless individual awards.

And now he’s France’s highest goalscorer ever.

At this point, it feels like every tournament comes with a new record attached to his name.

The Goalposts Keep Moving

There are footballers who announce themselves with one unforgettable season.

Then there are footballers who spend years proving they belong among the elite.

Kylian Mbappé belongs to a different category altogether.

Every tournament somehow becomes another opportunity for him to rewrite history, yet the conversation around him always sounds unfinished.

“He needs another World Cup.”

“He needs more Champions League titles.”

“He hasn’t done enough.”

Enough?

At what point do we stop treating greatness like a subscription service that keeps renewing?

We’ve Started Treating Greatness Like It’s Normal

Remember when breaking a record used to be a big deal?

Now Mbappé breaks one and people simply say,

“Nice. What’s next?”

That’s how good he’s become.

He’s been operating at such a high level for so long that we’ve accidentally turned excellence into an expectation.

If another 27-year-old footballer achieved half of what Mbappé has done, we’d probably spend months talking about it.

But because it’s Mbappé, we scroll, like and move on.

We’ve Become Too Comfortable With Excellence

Maybe that’s the problem.

Mbappé has been extraordinary for so long that we’ve started treating extraordinary as normal.

When he scores, people shrug.

When he breaks another record, timelines move on after a few hours.

Imagine if another young player had achieved half of what Mbappé has already accomplished.

The football world would probably build a museum.

The Messi and Ronaldo Effect Is Real

Maybe it’s because football fans spent almost twenty years watching two players do the impossible every weekend.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo completely changed what we think is normal.

Forty goals a season?

Normal.

Breaking records?

Normal.

Winning trophies every year?

Normal.

Now every young superstar is expected to match two players who completely rewrote football history.

That’s a crazy standard for anyone.

Yet Mbappé keeps getting compared to them every single season.

History Doesn’t Wait for Retirement

One funny thing about football fans is that we often wait until legends retire before appreciating them.

Only then do we start saying,

“We were lucky to watch him.”

Why wait?

Mbappé is still writing his story.

Every tournament adds another chapter.

Every record pushes the conversation further.

We’re watching history while it’s happening.

One day we’ll tell younger fans we watched Mbappé play every week.

Hopefully, we’ll appreciate it before nostalgia does the job for us.

Just Hold Diswan

Football has always been about moments.

Some players create moments.

Others become history.

Kylian Mbappé is steadily becoming both.

Whether you’re a fan or not, one thing is becoming increasingly difficult to deny:

We’re witnessing one of football’s all-time greats in real time.

And if history has taught us anything, it’s that records are temporary.

Legacies aren’t.
