Has It Become Out Of Fashion To Kneel For Elders?

It is common knowledge in Africa, especially amongst the Yoruba culture that kneeling to greet elders is a long-cherished custom. It is regarded as a how of respect and also mirrors the upbringing of the person performing this traditional act.

Shockingly, Afrobeat sweetheart, Oluwakanyinsola Aderibigbe, widely known as Ayra Starr is currently under attack over her display of apparent “disrespect” to Yoruba elders and veterans, in a gathering which included the legendary singer, King Sunny Ade (KSA).

In a video that has circulated cyber space, the singer is seen exchanging pleasantries with the elders, while she maintained a standing position. She, in fact, shook hands with each and everyone one them. The “Rush” crooner has now become a topic of conversation on social media platform, especially Twitter, now known as X over her recent exhibition.

Many have gone as far as point out the fact that music icon, Wizkid, who is much more older than Ayra, prostrated in the presence of King Sunny Ade at some other event. So she had no right to be badly behaved.

Although Ayra has tendered an apology, someone even castigated her for referring to him (KSA) as “Uncle”. That’s some wild and audacious move.

If this were to have happened in the Igbo culture, it could be pardoned as it is not such a big deal amongst them. However, the Yoruba culture is hugely built on respect, hence the backlash.

Could it be as a result of her outfit? Was she caught off guard? Don’t think she should have done better? Let’s know in the comment section.
