How To Convince Your Parents to Do a Social Media Challenge

This one na for the strong hearts! You see that trending social media challenge? The one with everybody doing that crazy dance or silly skit? Ya mama and papa no go even hear am! But fear not, because this guide will help you convince them to join the fun, with minimal “oyas, see what this child has gotten me into now” vibes.

Step 1: Approach with Respect (No Wahala!)

First things first, forget the ambush.  Nigerians value respect, so start with a calm conversation. Maybe after dinner when everyone dey chill.  “Mama, Papa, there’s this fun challenge trending online…” See how their eyebrow raise small?  “I know una no normally like these things, but…”  (Act shocked!)”But I saw Uncle Femi doing it with his wife the other day! They looked like they were having a great time!”

Step 2: Find a Challenge That Fits Their Style (No Yawa!)

Not every challenge go fly.  Forget about them doing the latest TikTok dance moves. Instead, find something that aligns with their interests.  They love oldies music? There’s probably a challenge where they recreate iconic dance moves from the 70s and 80s! They’re foodies? There’s a challenge for everything these days, even jollof rice variations!

Step 3: Sweeten the Deal (Small Small Sha)

A little incentive never hurt nobody.  “If you guys do the challenge, I’ll help you film it and even edit it small small.”  Offer to buy them some data or that fancy phone accessory they’ve been eyeing. “Plus, imagine all the likes and comments you go get from your friends and old colleagues!”

Step 4: Be Patient and Supportive (No Vexing!)

They might be a little hesitant at first. Don’t vex!  “No worries, I can teach you the steps.”  Be their hypeman! “You guys are going to be internet stars!”**

Step 5: Brace Yourself for Second-Hand Embarrassment (Small Dose Only)

Look, a little cringe is inevitable. But instead of hiding under the bed, film them with enthusiasm, laugh with them, and focus on the fun they’re having. This is about creating a memory together, not winning an Oscar.

Bonus Tip: Post Strategically (No Oversharing!)

Get their permission before posting anything online.  “Can I tag you guys in the video?” Respect their privacy. Maybe post it on your family WhatsApp group first for a private laugh.

Remember: The goal is to have fun and bond with your parents. Who knows, you might even discover a hidden talent! So go forth, champion this challenge, and get ready for some major laughs (and maybe a little agba slippers action if things get too crazy).
