How to Survive Nigerian Weddings

Nigerian weddings, my friend, are the real deal! ? They’re like a whirlwind of colors, bling, and pure joy, but they can also be a bit overwhelming and expensive if you’re not prepared. So, if you’ve got an invite to one of these cultural extravaganzas and you’re wondering how to keep your cool, your wallet, and your respect intact, I’ve got some gems of wisdom for you. ?

1. Dress to Impress:

When it comes to dressing up, think “fancy and traditional.” You’ve got options like Ankara, aso-oke, lace, or even Western suits and gowns. Just remember, no white or red – those are the bride and groom’s colors! And steer clear of anything too flashy, you don’t want to steal the spotlight from the couple. I remember when I went to my cousin’s wedding in Lagos last year, I rocked this gorgeous blue Ankara dress with some classy gold accessories, and let me tell you, I was getting compliments left and right!

2. Cash is King:

Nigerian weddings can be a financial rollercoaster. You’ve got to be prepared for transportation, food, drinks, gifts, and, of course, the famous “spraying” of money on the newlyweds during their dance. But don’t go overboard with the cash, you never know what might happen. Mobile banking and electronic transfers are your friends here. At my friend’s wedding in Abuja a couple of months back, I decided to send them a gift through my smartphone. Still, I made sure I had some cash in my pocket for emergencies and, of course, the dance! ?

3. Brace for the Crowds:

Nigerian weddings are like massive parties with hundreds or even thousands of guests. If you arrive late or don’t know anyone, you might find it tough to snag a seat or get some grub. Plus, there’s the traffic, noise, and security hustle. Be smart – show up on time, stick close to your crew, and be polite to everyone. I remember my sister’s wedding in Ibadan; I got there two hours early, secured a prime spot near the stage, and even packed some snacks just in case the jollof rice ran out! ??

4. Embrace the Party:

Despite the craziness, Nigerian weddings are a blast! The outfits are stunning, the food is delicious (jollof rice, anyone?), the music is banging, and there are incredible performances and even some laughs. And don’t forget the joy and love radiating from the couple and their families – it’s seriously heartwarming stuff. So don’t let stress get the best of you; enjoy every moment. Who knows, you might even meet your own special someone there! I met a good friend of mine at a wedding in Port Harcourt – we hit it off while grooving to afrobeat hits and bonding over suya. It’s been a beautiful journey since then.

In Conclusion: Nigerian weddings are like nothing else, a celebration of love and culture. Sure, they have their challenges, but if you follow these tips, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. So go out there, dance like nobody’s watching, savor the jollof rice, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll find your own love story in the midst of the vibrant chaos.
