The Guide to Surviving NEPA

Surviving NEPA – the struggle is real! It might stand for National Electric Power Authority, but we all know it often means “Never Expect Power Always” or “No Electric Power Anytime” in Nigeria. Despite the name change to PHCN (Power Holding Company of Nigeria), we still fondly call it NEPA. Dealing with those frequent power outages can be a real test of your patience and creativity. So, here’s a survival guide to help you navigate the NEPA rollercoaster:

1. Alternative Power Sources are Your BFF: If you can spare some cash, investing in a generator, inverter, solar panel, or battery is a game-changer. Just make sure you have enough fuel or charge to keep them going. Be frugal with power – turn off what you’re not using. And remember, safety first! Follow guidelines to prevent accidents.

2. Energy-Efficient Appliances are Key: Some appliances gobble up less electricity than others. Swap incandescent bulbs for energy-efficient LEDs, opt for laptops instead of desktop computers, and use fans instead of power-hungry air conditioners. Unplug stuff when they’re not in use, or when NEPA decides to play hide and seek.

3. Play by NEPA’s Rules: NEPA might not be known for its reliability, but it does have a schedule of sorts. Use this to your advantage. If they tend to supply power in the morning, plan your work or chores for then. If evenings are outage time, cook dinner and charge your gadgets earlier. Keep an ear out for announcements about NEPA’s schedule on the radio or online.

4. Get Creative and Stay Flexible: When NEPA throws you a curveball, get imaginative! No power for online stuff? Use your phone’s hotspot or hit up a nearby cybercafe. Entertainment options limited? Try board games, pick up a good book, or share stories with friends and family. No fridge? Ice blocks, coolers, or clay pots can keep your food fresh.

5. Stay Patient and Positive: Last but not least, keep your cool and stay optimistic. Don’t let power outages get you down. Look at the bright side. Use the downtime to relax, meditate, pray, or connect with loved ones. Embrace the moments without electricity, and when it comes back, make an effort to conserve it. Remember, things will improve, and NEPA’s service will get better someday.

NEPA might be a daily challenge, but it’s definitely conquerable. By following these tips, you can ride the NEPA rollercoaster with a smile and manage the electricity shortage in Nigeria like a pro! ????
