Why You’re Always Tired (And It’s Not Just Sleep)

2 min

You went to bed at a reasonable hour; you didn’t even scroll that much, you woke up this morning and somehow, you’re still exhausted. If this is your daily reality, then sit back and read this piece curated just for you.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you, there are at least five other things quietly draining you, and until you address them, no number of early bedtimes will fix the problem.

1.Your Iron Levels are Low

Iron is a key component of haemoglobin , the protein that allows red blood cells to carry oxygen around your body. When iron levels drop, oxygen supply suffers, and fatigue becomes your body’s distress signal.

The scary part? Iron deficiency commonly occurs due to dietary gaps, blood loss from heavy menstrual bleeding, or issues with absorption.

So, if your periods are heavy, or you’re not eating enough iron-rich foods, your body could be running on fumes without you even knowing.

2. You’re Dehydrated

Most women underestimate how dehydrated they are, especially in warmer parts of the world. By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already severely dehydrated.

That mid-afternoon slump you’re blaming on your workload? It might just be that you’ve had two glasses of water all day.

Take at least 8 glasses of water daily, and more if you’re active or it’s hot. Start your morning with a full glass before anything.

3. Your Cortisol Is Out of Control

Cortisol is your body’s primary stress hormone, and in small, well-timed doses, it’s actually useful. The problem is, chronic stress causes cortisol patterns to spike, disrupting your sleep and making your energy completely unreliable. The signs are:  Struggling to get going in the morning, craving sugar constantly, brain fog that won’t lift, and that 3 p.m. slump.

4. You’re Not Eating the Right Things at the Right Times

You can sleep eight hours and still crash by noon if your meals aren’t working for you. Blood sugar spikes and crashes are a major, underrated cause of fatigue, and they happen when you skip breakfast, eat mostly carbs with no protein, or go too long between meals.

Building your meals around protein, fibre, and healthy fats stabilizes blood sugar and prevents those awful energy crashes.

Leave bread and doughnut alone.

5.  Social and Emotional Exhaustion Is Real

This one doesn’t show up on any blood test, but it is very much a thing. Women juggling work, family, friends, and the mental load of keeping everything together experience a level of exhaustion that goes well beyond physical tiredness.

Add to that the emotional labour of managing relationships, being “on” for people all the time, and processing your own feelings in the margins.

All these things can make you break down!

Take care of your health, pay attention to early signs, drink water, and stay alive!
