5 Signs You’re Lowkey an Attention Seeker

2 min

Some people want attention so badly that even when the conversation is not about them, they will find a way to make it about themselves. They want to be noticed, checked on, praised, and constantly reassured that they matter. And the funny thing? If you call them out, they might still find a way to make themselves the victim.

Before you start tagging your friends, here are five signs you might be just that person.

1. Everything Must Revolve Around You

You behave like if everything doesn’t revolve around you, you won’t be okay. That’s a very yeye behavior, because you need to decenter yourself from that school of thought.

Someone will be sharing an experience, and somehow, you will find a way to bring the conversation back to yourself. Your friend will say they travelled to Abuja, and before you know it, you’re talking about the time you almost relocated to Canada.

Likeeeee, must everything be about you? Please rest, jare. Let other people have their moments too.

2. You Don’t Understand Boundaries

Even when your friends have clearly told you what they can and cannot tolerate, you still want to test the limits of their patience. Omo, is something disturbing your brain upstairs?

You will keep doing the exact thing they asked you to stop doing, and when they finally call you out, you will start rage-baiting them or twisting the situation to make them look like the bad person.

My dear, friendship is not a patience competition. If somebody tells you something makes them uncomfortable, respect it. You don’t have to push every boundary just to prove a point.

3. You Enjoy Exaggerating Everything

Something small happens, but by the time you finish narrating it, it sounds like a scene from a Nollywood epic.

Someone greeted you without smiling, and suddenly, they have been treating you badly for three years. Your friend cancelled plans once, and you’re already saying nobody ever shows up for you.

You always need to add dramatic effects, even when the situation doesn’t call for it. At this point, your head needs washing inside the lagoon because what exactly are we doing here?

Not everything is a major crisis. Sometimes, something simply happens. Let it be.

4. You’re Very Clingy

Your own clinginess isn’t cute, rara. It’s becoming irritating.

You want to talk every minute, know where your friend is, demand instant replies, and get upset when they want to spend time alone. To make matters worse, you’ll start whining in a childish way, as if you’re a whole toddler whose favourite toy has been taken away.

Ahhhhh, a whole grown adult like you!

Love your friends, absolutely. But please allow them to breathe. Someone can love you and still want to watch a film alone, sleep for eight hours, or spend an entire Sunday without replying to your messages.

5. You Always Need People to Reassure You

You post something and keep checking who viewed it. If your friend doesn’t compliment your outfit, you’re suddenly wondering if they hate you. You do something good, but if nobody praises you, the achievement somehow loses its value.

You need people to constantly tell you that you’re beautiful, talented, funny, or important. And when they don’t, your mood changes immediately.

Omo, must there be a standing ovation every time you enter a room?

It’s okay to enjoy compliments and appreciate being noticed. But if your happiness depends entirely on other people’s reactions, you might need to work on how you see yourself.

On a Lighter Note

Attention is sweet, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel seen, loved, or appreciated. The problem starts when you need to be the centre of attention at everyone else’s expense.

Sometimes, let your friend tell their story without interrupting. Respect people’s boundaries. And please, allow a group chat to move on without dragging the conversation back to yourself.

Now, be honest: which of these signs have you noticed in someone you know? And before you point fingers, are you sure you’re not guilty of one or two?
