There was a time when buying bathroom slippers meant walking into a shop, picking the one that looked comfortable, and going home. Nobody needed to know the brand, and nobody was taking pictures of it for Instagram.
But things have changed. These days, ordinary household items are getting luxury makeovers, aesthetic packaging, and prices that make you question your life choices. From candles that smell like a five-star hotel to water bottles that cost a small fortune, even the simplest things are now part of the soft-life lifestyle.
Whether it’s for the aesthetic, the comfort, or simply because we want our homes to look like something from Pinterest, here are eight ordinary things Nigerians have turned into luxury.
1. Scented Candles

A candle used to be something you brought out when NEPA decided to remind you who was in charge. Now, scented candles are home dΓ©cor essentials.
You can get candles that smell like vanilla, fresh linen, tropical fruits, or an expensive hotel lobby. Some even come in beautiful jars that look too good to throw away after the candle has finished burning, cos why not repurpose it??
The funny part? You can be using your phone torch to look for something in your room while a luxury candle sits on your bedside table, making everything smell like soft life.
2. Designer Bathroom Slippers

Bathroom slippers used to be one of those things nobody paid much attention to. As long as they were comfortable and didn’t make you slip on a wet floor, they were good to go.
Now, there are designer bathroom slippers with minimalist designs, fancy colours, and price tags that make you wonder whether they come with a little insurance on their tags.
Some people just want something to wear while showering, but others want their bathroom slippers to match the overall aesthetic of their home. At this point, even going to brush your teeth can become a fashion moment.
3. Fancy Water Bottles

It’s water ooo. HβO.
Something you can get from your kitchen tap or buy in a sachet. Yet, fancy water bottles have become a lifestyle accessory.
From oversized tumblers to insulated bottles with handles, straws, and trendy designs, people now have favourite water bottles that go everywhere with them.
And honestly, if buying a beautiful bottle encourages you to drink more water, fair enough. But when the bottle costs more than the water you plan to put inside it, you have to pause and appreciate the economy of things.
4. Luxury Bedsheets

At some point, bedsheets stopped being just something you spread on your mattress. Now, people are investing in high-thread-count sheets, matching pillowcases, duvet sets, and colours that complement their bedroom dΓ©cor.
When you know Nigeria is a very humid country and heat want to wound us here.
You can spend a considerable amount of money creating a bed that looks like it belongs in a luxury hotel. Everything has to match, from the duvet to the throw blanket and decorative pillows.
Meanwhile, some of us are just looking for a bedsheet that doesn’t come off the mattress every time we turn over in our sleep.
5. Aesthetic Coffee Mugs

There was a time when any clean mug could serve for tea, coffee, or Milo. These days, your morning drink apparently deserves its own aesthetic experience.
Some mugs have cute designs, unusual shapes, matching saucers, or minimalist finishes that make them look like something from a fancy cafΓ©. They are not just for drinking anymore; they are also for desk setups, Instagram pictures, and Pinterest-inspired mornings.
Imagine buying an expensive mug, making your usual three-in-one coffee, and drinking it while rushing to work. The mug may be living its best life, but you are still fighting for your life in Lagos traffic.
6. Designer Tote Bags

Tote bags were originally a simple way to carry things around. Now, they have become fashion statements, with designer versions costing significantly more than the everyday items they are meant to hold.
People use them for work, shopping, school, errands, and just about anything else. Some are made from premium materials, while others feature recognisable logos and designs that make them stand out.
The irony is that the bag could be carrying a laptop, a bottle of water, snacks, and receipts you have been meaning to throw away since last month. But because the bag is giving luxury, we shall respect it.
7. Fancy Hand Wash and Lotion Dispensers

Even washing your hands has entered its aesthetic era.
Instead of keeping hand wash and lotion in their original containers, some people transfer them into matching glass, ceramic, or minimalist dispensers. Suddenly, the bathroom sink looks like it belongs in a luxury spa.
And to be fair, matching dispensers can make a space look neater. But it’s still funny that the same liquid soap you can buy from the supermarket now needs a beautiful container before it can fit into the bathroom aesthetic.
The soap is doing the same job. It just has better PR.
8. Humidifiers

Humidifiers are useful devices that add moisture to the air, especially in dry indoor environments. But beyond their practical purpose, some have become part of the modern home aesthetic.
There are compact humidifiers with soft lighting, sleek designs, and decorative finishes that fit perfectly on a bedside table or office desk. Some even look like tiny decorative lamps.
Now, your room needs the right lighting, a scented candle, matching bedsheets, and a humidifier to complete the soft-life experience.
At this rate, the air in your bedroom may be enjoying a better quality of life than you are.
My Two-piece…
Honestly, there is nothing wrong with wanting your space to look beautiful or spending money on things that make everyday life more enjoyable. If a scented candle helps you relax after a stressful day or a fancy water bottle encourages you to stay hydrated, enjoy yourself.
But it is interesting how ordinary things have become part of the luxury lifestyle, especially when aesthetics and social media influence what we buy.
The real question is: are we buying these things because we genuinely need or enjoy them, or because everything around us has to look expensive now?
