Lagos Life: The Game That Turned Our Daily Wahala Into Entertainment

1 min

Nigerians have finally found a way to suffer in Lagos for fun!! LOL

Lagos Life is a free browser game that went live on October 1, Independence Day and by October 5, its dashboard showed more than 2 million total players and over 145,000 people online at once!

Let me gist you a little bit about the game that’s making many Nigerians audio billionaires. Lol!

You create a character, find a job, earn naira, pay rent and move around a virtual Lagos.

The game is a multiplayer simulation, so you can meet, chat and work alongside other players. There’s even a governor whose tenure is almost over, plus commissioners for health, transport, works and finance. Yes ooo, even the game has politics.

Lagos Life was built by Shalom, a Nigerian developer based in the UK. She came across another Nigerian browser game, Lagos Run, on X, and less than 12 hours later, Lagos Life existed.

She has said she drew inspiration from The Sims 3, which she played as a child, and from Lagos Run.

Everybody is playing this game because it’s relatable. We spend the whole week in the real thing, and now we can do it with the stress turned down a little bit.

There’s no traffic to fight and no landlord shouting at the gate, although you do still have to pay rent.

Will the crowd stay once the curiosity fades? That’s uncertain, according to reports, but whatever happens next, one Nigerian developer made our Lagos wahala appear less stressful.
