If you’re a movie lover, then you know that we don’t usually go to Tyler Perry for soft love. We go for drama, wahala and a plot twist that’ll make you go crazy *In a good way. So, when ‘Doing Life’ dropped on Netflix on October 2, with romance and not a revenge thriller, we were all excited!
The story is simple but loaded.
Anika is a single mother and former prison officer, and Carousel is a former inmate who saved her during a violent prison riot. After he gets out, they find each other again, and their bond grows into something deeper. Her sisters and her mother obviously don’t like the relationship, but Anika and Carousel do not relent.
The scene that blew my mind was when Carousel covered his eyes with a towel just so Anika’s mother would feel comfortable. That is not just sweet, that is respect! And honestly, he might be the sweetest male character Tyler Perry has ever written!
Tyler Perry said the story was inspired by people he’s known, from single mothers doing everything for their kids to people coming out of prison hoping for a second chance.
This is not a “fine boy, fine girl, fine house” romance. It’s struggle love, it’s the started from the bottom, I suffered with you kind of love story.
Is it the Romance movie of the year? In my opinion, It’s a serious contender for that title.
If you want your love stories with deep emotions, a bit of pain and a lot of second chances, this one is for you.
Make sure you watch this one on Netflix and tell us what you think!
