Nigeria is deeper than just vibes and Fun. Our ancestors were steady dropping cultural artifacts like their lives depended on it, and years after, we can’t still get over these amazing sculptures.

1. Nok Terracotta

Dating back to 500 BC, the Nok terracotta figures are basically the first “Instagram models.” With detailed hairstyles and jewelry, they show that drip has always been part of Nigerian culture.

Nok art refers to the artworks made by the people of the Nok culture, found in Nok villages throughout Nigeria. Creativity 100000/10000.The Nok culture is named after the town of Nok in Kaduna State, where the first figurines were discovered in 1928 by a miner.

2. Ife Bronze Heads

Between the 12th and 15th centuries, the Ife people created bronze heads so realistic that early archaeologists thought they were made in Europe. They weren’t oo! Yoruba artistry was simply on another level.

Imagine creating something so good that westerners begin to doubt it was crafted in Nigeria

3. Benin Bronzes

The Benin Bronzes consist of thousands of brass and bronze plaques, statues, and ceremonial objects created between the 13th and 19th centuries. They depict royal figures, warriors, animals, and mythological beings, capturing the grandeur of the Benin Kingdom.

The craftsmanship is so precise that art historians still study the casting techniques today. The detail on a single plaque, the texture of fabric, the expression on a face, is the kind of thing that takes your breath away in person.

The Ife heads are currently the official symbol on Nigeria’s 25 kobo coin. They also live at the National Commission for Museums and Monuments in Ile-Ife, the National Museum Lagos, and, yes, the British Museum.

4. The Igbo-Ukwu Bronzes

In 1938, a man named Isaiah Anozie was digging in his compound in Igbo-Ukwu, Anambra State, and struck something unusual. He pulled out bronze objects of breathtaking intricacy, vessels decorated with insects, roped patterns, and geometric designs of such delicacy that archaeologists who later excavated the site struggled to believe what they were seeing.

Igbo-Ukwu art bronze is considered the earliest type of art in the sub-Saharan region, and many believe it is the most sophisticated and precious art in Nigeria.

Now you know how really amazing Nigerians are when it comes to art! Honestly, we been doing this like we were born with it…wait, yes, we were!
