You have finished school, started working and finally have your own little income. Shey?
Then suddenly, family members start looking at that small salary like it is a family emergency fund.
As how nauuu?
The same ₦200k you have already divided into transport, food, data, bills, savings and “let me just enjoy myself small” has suddenly developed ten different responsibilities.
So Because I Started Working, I’m Now the Family ATM?
Omo, the way everybody suddenly becomes financially stranded once you start earning needs to be studied.
“Please, I need ₦20k.”
“Abeg, help me with ₦10k.”
“Your younger sibling needs this.”
“Can you send something?”
And you’re there looking at your account balance like:
“Is everybody seeing something I’m not seeing?”
You have barely received your salary and your money has already started attending family meetings without you.
Omo, you people should respect yourself ooo
Please Don’t Let “We’ll Die Without You” Stress You
Let me tell you something: even if you don’t give them the money and they start behaving like the entire family economy has collapsed, breathe.
They will survive.
I promise you.
Your refusal to send ₦30k is not going to bring the Nigerian economy to its knees.
Sometimes, you need to say “I can’t afford it right now” and actually mean it.
Because if you keep giving away every little thing you earn, when exactly will you build anything for yourself?
Save your money.
Plan your life.
Enjoy your small money.
You are also somebody’s child.
I Asked for Heirloom, Not Generational Billing
Black tax is talked about so much that sometimes we treat it like it is simply the price of growing up.
But honestly, there has to be a balance.
I understand helping family when you can. I understand that many Nigerian families survive through collective support.
But please, let the young person breathe.
I am expecting heirloom.
I am expecting inheritance.
I am expecting somebody to say, “My child, take this land.”
Not:
“My child, school fees is due.”
“My child, help us with rent.”
“My child, your aunty needs money.”
Omo.
I wanted generational wealth, and not generational billing?
