Apple Just Released the Iphone 18!

2 min

So, Apple has officially entered its “Samsung who?” era.

At Wednesday’s event, new CEO John Ternus, stepping into Tim Cook’s very large shoes for the first time, pulled the wrapper off the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first ever foldable phone.

Book-style design, 5.4-inch cover screen, 7.6-inch inner screen that unfolds into what’s basically a mini-iPad, and Apple is calling it the thinnest iPhone they’ve ever made. Starting price? A cool $1,999.

And just like that, the timeline split into two camps.

Team Samsung is out here with the biggest “we told you so” energy Twitter (sorry, X) has seen all year.

Samsung has been doing the fold-life since the Galaxy Z Fold, so when Apple rolled out with basically the same concept nine generations later, the side-eyes came in hot. “Apple really waited this long to ‘invent’ what Samsung’s been doing since 2019 “

Team iPhone, meanwhile, is not hearing any of it. To them, Apple didn’t copy anything, Apple perfected it. Apple fans have never needed Apple to be first, just needed Apple to be Apple.

Somebody’s already dragging out the classic “Apple took their time and did it right” defense, and honestly, at this point it writes itself.

Meanwhile the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max — the phones actually landing first, this Saturday for preorder — are having a whole moment of their own, mostly because of the price hike nobody saw coming. $1,199 for the Pro, $1,299 for the Pro Max, a straight $100 jump from last year, courtesy of what Apple’s blaming on a global chip shortage. Nigerians are already doing the naira math, and honestly, it is NOT giving peace of mind.

Nigerian iPhone loyalists are already deep in strategy mode: who’s travelling abroad this quarter, whose cousin is “carrying” one back.

The iPhone Duo especially is about to become the new ultimate flex. Lagos people are about to flex with this new phone

One thing’s for sure though, fold or no fold, copycat allegations or not, Apple just handed the internet its next few weeks of content. And honestly? We’re here for it.
