The Talking Stage Is Doing Too Much Talking!

2 min

Somebody needs to explain to me when “getting to know each other” turned into a part-time job with no offer letter at the end. Because in 2026, the talking stage isn’t a stage anymore, it’s a whole residency.

People are moving in, decorating, hanging up “welcome” mats in a relationship that was never officially opened for business.

Let’s be honest about what’s happening.

Nobody wants to be the one who “catches feelings first”

Somewhere along the line, having feelings became a liability instead of the whole point. So now everybody’s performing calm. Texting back slow on purpose. Pretending they didn’t screenshot that message to send to the group chat. It’s not confidence, it’s fear wearing confidence’s outfit, and both people are doing it at the same time, which means nobody moves.

“Defining the relationship” now sounds like a business merger

DTR used to be a five-minute conversation. Now it’s treated like signing a contract nobody read the terms of. People want commitment without conversation, clarity without confrontation. So the talking stage becomes the place where you get all the intimacy of a relationship, the good morning texts, the late-night calls, the “wyd” energy, with none of the accountability.

Why would anyone rush to leave that?

Social media turned “situationship” into aesthetic

Let’s not lie, being undefined got trendy. It’s giving mysterious. It’s giving “we’re just vibing.” Except vibing for eight months isn’t a vibe anymore, it’s a pattern, and patterns have names.

Everybody’s “healing” and nobody’s available

2026 dating culture said, “know yourself before you commit” and then never set a deadline on the knowing. So now we’ve got a generation of people who are permanently “working on themselves”, which sounds mature until you realize it’s also the perfect alibi for staying non-committal indefinitely.
