5 Ways to Know If Your Perfume Is Original

Buying perfume in Nigeria is sometimes like online dating.

The pictures can be convincing. The packaging can be fine. The seller can swear on everything, even their lineage isn’t safe.

But when the real thing arrives, you start asking yourself:

“What exactly have I been spraying on myself?”

Before you spend serious money on a perfume only to discover you’ve been walking around smelling like air freshener with ambition, here are five things to check.

1. Inspect the Packaging Properly

Don’t just look at the perfume box and say, “Ah, e fine.”

Look closely.

Check the spelling, fonts, logo, print quality and how everything is aligned. Original perfumes generally have clean, sharp and consistent packaging.

If the writing looks blurry, the cardboard feels suspiciously cheap or the logo looks like somebody recreated it on Canva at 2 a.m…

Omo, investigate am.

Because if the box itself is already struggling, imagine what’s inside.

2. Check the Batch Code

Look for the batch or lot code on the box and bottle.

They should generally correspond.

But please don’t see one random number and start shouting:

“It’s original! I have confirmed it!”

A batch code is one clue, not a DNA test.

Counterfeit perfumes can have copied codes too, so use it alongside the other checks.

3. Examine the Bottle

This is where you become Inspector Gadget.

Look at the glass, cap, label, bottle finishing and spray nozzle.

Does everything look properly made?

Does the cap fit nicely?

Is the label straight?

Does the bottle feel sturdy?

Or does it look like one strong Lagos breeze will scatter everything?

Original perfumes usually have attention to detail, so obvious flaws should make you pause.

4. Pay Attention to How the Scent Develops

Don’t spray perfume once, smell it for three seconds and declare:

“This is fake!”

Fragrances develop over time.

The opening scent can change as it dries down into the heart and base notes.

So give it some time.

But if your ₦200k perfume enters the room like a superstar and disappears before you finish saying “I just bought this”…

Hmmmm.

They have scammed you laidat

Performance alone doesn’t prove a perfume is fake, though. Longevity can vary based on the fragrance, your skin, weather and storage.

5. Check Who You Bought It From

Honestly, this one can save you plenty of headache.

If someone is selling a perfume for ₦250,000 everywhere and one random Instagram account says:

“₦45k. Last price. Original 100%. No story.”

Please don’t let desperation turn you into a fragrance detective after you’ve already paid.

Buy from the brand, an authorised retailer or a reputable seller with a solid track record.

Because sometimes the easiest way to avoid a fake perfume is to avoid buying from someone who looks like they also sell phone chargers, waist trainers and human hair from the same WhatsApp status.
