TOP NIGERIAN LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AND WHAT THEY ACTUALLY HANDLE

Because “call the police” isn’t always the right agency to call.

These are notable law enforcement agencies in Nigeria and the specific things they handle:

1. Nigerian Police Force (NPF)

The largest and principal law enforcement agency in the country, established in 1930. Handles general law and order and technically oversees the activities of other law enforcement bodies. Basically, your default first call.

2. Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)

The one everybody knows. Established in 2003, focused on financial crimes, money laundering, fraud, embezzlement, advance fee fraud, corruption-related financial cases.

Currently chaired by Olanipekun Olukoyede. If it involves stolen money, this is who’s coming.

3. Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC)

Inaugurated in 2000, often confused with the EFCC, but its lane is specifically corruption and abuse of office receiving and investigating corruption reports, and pushing systemic fixes to corruption-prone processes, rather than pure financial crime.

4. National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)

Nigeria’s frontline agency against illicit drugs, established in 1989. Handles cultivation, trafficking, and distribution of banned substances, currently chaired by Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd).

5. Department of State Services (DSS)

Nigeria’s domestic intelligence agency handles internal security threats, counter-terrorism, and protection of key officials. This is the one that operates quietly until it very much doesn’t.

6. Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)

A paramilitary agency dating back to 1967, formalized in 2003. Protects critical infrastructure (like pipelines), provides election security, and regulates private security companies operating in the country.

7. Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)

Handles everything road-related. Driver’s licenses, roadworthiness checks, accident prevention, and traffic management on federal highways.

8. Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)

Manages entry, exit, and residency matters, passports, visas, and border control.

9. National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP)

Handles the investigation and prosecution of human trafficking cases, alongside rescue and rehabilitation of trafficking victims.

Also works closely with agencies like Customs on cross-border trafficking and smuggling cases.

10. Nigeria Customs Service (NCS)

Established in 1958. Handles trade facilitation, border security, and enforcement, this covers everything from smuggling and prohibited imports to counterfeit goods, illegal wildlife trade, and revenue collection at the borders.
